1. At what age can I start learning to drive a car?

You can start learning to drive a car at 17 years old (or 16 if you receive the enhanced rate of the mobility component of PIP).

2. What do I need before starting lessons?

You need a provisional driving licence and must be able to read a number plate from 20 metres away

3. How many lessons will I need?

The DVSA recommends around 45 hours of professional instruction plus 22 hours of private practice on average.

4. Do I need to pass the theory test before booking the practical test?

Yes. You must pass the theory and hazard perception tests before booking your practical driving test.

5. Can I take automatic driving lessons instead of manual?

Yes. However, an automatic licence only allows you to drive automatic cars. Manual licences allow both.

6. How long does it take to get a full driving licence?

Most learners pass within 3 to 6 months, depending on lesson frequency and experience.

7. Can I drive as soon as I pass my practical test?

Yes, you can drive unaccompanied immediately once you pass the practical test and receive confirmation.

 

1. What is a Category C+E licence?

A Category C+E licence allows you to drive large vehicles over 3.5 tonnes with a trailer over 750 kg (e.g., articulated lorries).

2. What are the steps to getting a Category C+E licence?

  1. Apply for a provisional Category C licence.
  2. Pass a medical exam (D4 form).
  3. Apply for your provisional licence (D2 form).
  4. Pass the Theory Test (Multiple Choice + Hazard Perception).
  5. Complete CPC Module 2 (case studies).
  6. Pass the Category C practical test (Module 3a off-road + 3b on-road).
  7. Pass the Category C+E practical test.
  8. Complete CPC Module 4 (practical demonstration test).

3. How old do I need to be to get an HGV licence?

You must be at least 18 years old to drive HGVs, including Category C and C+E, provided you pass the required qualifications.

4. Do I need to get a Category C licence before C+E?

No. Since November 2021 the law has changed allowing you to go directly to Class 1 (Category C + E).

5. What’s the difference between Category C and C+E?

  • Category C (Class 2): Rigid lorries without trailers.
  • Category C+E (Class 1): Articulated lorries or trucks with trailers over 750kg.

6. Do I need a Driver CPC to drive an HGV professionally?

Yes. You must complete 35 hours of Periodic Driver CPC training every 5 years unless exempt.

7. How long does HGV training take?

Typically, it takes 4–8 weeks to complete the entire training process including medical, theory, and practical exams.

8. How much does it cost to get a Category C+E licence?

Costs vary but expect to pay £1,500–£3,000 for complete training including CPC.

9. Can I go straight to C+E without doing C?

As of 2021, yes – fast-track options are available where you can train directly for C+E without needing to pass C first (known as “licence upgrading”).

10. What jobs can I do with a Category C+E licence?

You can drive:

  • Articulated lorries
  • Tankers
  • Long-haul trucks
  • Container transport
  • Distribution HGVs

11. Do I need to renew my HGV licence?

Yes.

  • From age 45, you must renew it every 5 years with a medical.
  • After age 65, renewal is annually.

12. What medical conditions affect my eligibility?

Conditions like epilepsy, diabetes (insulin-treated), or vision impairments may affect eligibility. A DVLA-approved medical is required.

13. How can I find work after getting my C+E licence?

Use recruitment agencies, online job boards, and network with haulage firms. Sangha Driving School may also offer job placement support.

14. What is the difference between CPC Module 2 and Module 4?

  • Module 2: Case studies (theory).
  • Module 4: Practical demonstration covering safety, load securing, and daily checks.

15. What’s the average salary for a C+E HGV driver?

In the UK, average pay ranges from £35,000–£50,000+, depending on experience, employer, and routes (e.g. long haul pays more).

16. Can I get funding for HGV training?

Yes, through:

  • Armed Forces resettlement (ELC)
